World Clubfoot Day

The 3rd Annual World Clubfoot Day California will be June 09, 2018 at 11:00AM. Clubfoot families will have a chance to meet, connect, and support each other at Florence Joyner Olympiad Park (22760 Olympiad Rd). While parents get to know one another, fun games and activities will be provided for the children, this year our theme will be the Olympics. Families will have a chance to support Clubfoot C.A.R.E.S., a US-based, nonprofit advocacy group created by moms who have children with clubfoot. This organization promotes public awareness of clubfoot and the Ponseti method of treatment, and works to educate and empower patients and their families. Our own Dr. Rodriguez sits on the medical board for this organization.  The Ponseti method was developed at the University of Iowa by Dr. Ignacio Ponseti, M.D. This method is nearly 100% effective when used properly by a trained health care provider and is considered the “gold standard” treatment for clubfoot worldwide.

There are several ways to support: you can donate items to be raffled off at the event, buy lots of raffle tickets for your chance to get your favorite item, or simply make a cash donation.  For more information, please call (949) 364-9255.

The Ponseti International Association nominated June 3rd as World Clubfoot Day.The date was agreed upon to celebrate and honor the day Dr. Ignacio Ponseti was born, the man who developed the Ponseti method for the treatment of clubfoot. The intent of World Clubfoot day is to educate the public about clubfoot disability and its prevention with the Ponseti Method.

Clubfoot is one of the most common congenital birth defects. On average one in a thousand infants is born with clubfoot worldwide. Parents of infants born with clubfoot should understand that clubfoot is treatable. Neglected or mistreated clubfoot in children and adults may cause emotional and physical pain and possible shame, discrimination, and bullying. In developing countries, many children do not have access to health care and are forced to live with untreated clubfoot.

In honor of World Clubfoot Day, we at SCFAS joined forces with Jill Harold (Clubfoot mom and advocate), Tony Spineto (Clubfoot Triathlete, clubfoot dad and advocate) to create World Clubfoot Day California. This is an annual celebration for the clubfoot community, with an opportunity to connect and inspire those locally and support international clubfoot organizations.
