Should I Get a Second Opinion?
Let’s say you just got back from your appointment with a doctor—maybe even Dr. Spencer or Dr. Rodriguez—and you aren’t quite sure how to feel, or what to decide. Maybe you’re nervous about a surgery or other procedure that was recommended. Perhaps you’re not convinced the diagnosis fully explains your symptoms. Maybe you just want to review your options, or gain some peace of mind. Should you get a second opinion?
Our answer might surprise you: it’s yes! All are great reasons to get a second opinion, even if our team gave you the first opinion.
Don’t Fear to Ask
At Southern California Foot & Ankle Specialists, we welcome and encourage second opinions. This is whether we’re the ones providing an additional viewpoint, or you want to follow up our assessment with a different doctor or specialist. We’re even happy to point you in the direction of another professional we trust, should you wish for a recommendation or referral. We also provide second opinions, of course, to those who have seen other doctors.
In the medical world, second opinions are very common and the majority of doctors will not be upset or offended by them. While we’re very confident in our skills and diagnoses, we understand that sometimes our patients want to seek out additional advice, even if only for peace of mind. Our top priority is making sure you are as knowledgeable as possible, comfortable as possible, and get the best possible care. Most of the time, another doctor will tell you the same thing the first doctor did. But sometimes, they may be able to offer a different viewpoint or treatment option that may be better suited to your needs.
Put another way: if you’re wondering if you should get a second opinion, go ahead and get one. And if you’re looking for an experienced and caring team of foot and ankle specialists to provide clarity on a previous diagnosis or recommendation, don’t be afraid to reach out and give us a call.
