Tarsal Coalitions

A tarsal coalition in the foot occurs when two or more bones of the foot become improperly connected. The union of these bones can produce a pronounced form of flatfoot. This condition causes decrease motion or absence of motion in one or more joints in the foot. Coalitions typically occur during gestation, but most children are asymptomatic. It is usually during adolescence or early adult years that the foot becomes painful and stiff, making common activities uncomfortable.

Treatment generally includes orthotics, resting the foot, wearing a cast or boot, corticosteroid injections and physical therapy. However, if symptoms persist, surgery may be necessary.
